SCULPTOR’S SNACK  PROJECT

ALL ABOUT SCULPTURE, IN A CAN.

Begin with heat.

Then observe: mass swells, surfaces alter,

gravity changes, and at the boundary, inside and outside invert.

Transformation is always near.

This canned corn kernel is a device for contemplating six fundamental elements of sculpture.

Sculpture involves characteristics inherent to its medium̶mass, surface, gravity, boundary,

transformation through heat, and the readymade̶each of which has challenged generations of artists

in different ways.

Among these, the surface of a sculpture not only refers to texture, but also functions as a boundary

wall between the work and the surrounding space. In this sense, the sculptor’ s task may be described

as the tactile, bodily construction of boundaries. Leonardo da Vinci once remarked that sculpture was a

filthy form of manual labor. And even though today we can 3D print everything from marble to wood,

there remains something compelling about physically and sensorially exploring the edge between one

thing and another. Sculptors intuitively know they are present at the moment when something

previously absent from the world emerges̶omething that might entirely change our perspective of

the world..

That said, if I speak personally, ideas don’ t exactly pop out of me like popcorn. If only they did. As we

all know, glossy dried corn kernels, when placed over heat, swell up and burst outward, as the starch

inside pushes through the surface, forming fluffy, cloudlike popcorn. Then, I pour caramel sauce over it.

And while gazing into the mirrored world reflected in that sauce, I begin to wonder again̶about the

creative renewal of the world that art strives for, and about those invisible boundaries we have yet to

discover.
